About Hampshire Recorder Sinfonia (HRS)

Musical Director: Christopher Burgess. .

HRS is an independent group of some 30-40 players of mixed ages and musical backgrounds who perform as a recorder orchestra. Based in Havant and Winchester, Hampshire (UK), the foundations of HRS were laid in 1987 as a wide-ranging series of recorder classes designed to enhance the musical capabilities and experiences of local recorder players. Almost 30 years later, HRS has grown into a fully fledged performance orchestra with a vast concert repertoire and draws a collection of fine players from a wide geographical area. In order to widen awareness of the recorder as a serious instrument in its own right and to present the ever increasing range of the recorder orchestra repertoire to the general public, HRS performs three or four concerts a year. Additionally, it has recorded three compact discs and taken part in an international recorder orchestra exchange.

HRS has a constitution setting out its purpose and mode of operation. The current chair of the committee is Penny Smith to whom any general enquiries related to HRS or approaches for possible concerts by HRS should be directed by e-mail or phone (01329 834297).

HRS is always ready to consider invitations to provide concerts for private individuals or organisations. It welcomes invitations to perform fundraising concerts for worthy charities and will consider performances which involve musical and financial collaborations with other organisations such as choirs or drama groups.

HRS rehearses during school term times, weekly on Wednesday evening at Havant and monthly on Saturday morning in Winchester. All rehearsals prepare for the term’s forthcoming concerts. The weekly Wednesday rehearsals are held in the Music Room at Warblington School, Southleigh Road, Havant PO9 2RR and the monthly Saturday rehearsals in Winchester are held between 10.00am-1.00pm in the Bushfield Room at Badger Farm Community Centre, Winchester SO22 4QB.

HRS welcomes playing visits from able recorder players at Havant or Winchester, or both. Besides being a great deal of fun, playing as a 'visitor' provides prospective HRS players the opportunity to see whether they can manage the repertoire before formally attempting to join as a permanent member of the orchestra. If you would like to join HRS as a visiting player, you can contact HRS by e-mail or telephone.
